Cadillac Escalade MPG: Engines

It's important to understand what kind of engine you're working with so you can understand the kinds of demands placed on the vehicle. The Escalade comes with a variety of engines, which are the following:

  • 3.0L Duramax® Turbo Diesel Engine: 277 HP and 460 lb-ft of torque
  • 6.2L V8 Engine: Dynamic Fuel Management, Direct Injection, and Variable Valve Timing, 420 HP (with premium gasoline) and 460 lb-ft of torque
  • 6.2L Supercharged V8 DI Engine: Active Fuel Managementâ„¢, 682 HP and 653 lb-ft of torque

We can see that while the smaller engine is great, the larger V8 choices offer more options. When it comes to getting the most out the 24-gallon fuel tank, you're selecting between the two V8 engines. With two different kinds of fuel management systems, you get to choose which one is best for you:

  • Dynamic Fuel Management: A system that calculates how much power is needed when accelerating, and turns off certain cylinders when not in use.
  • Active Fuel Managementâ„¢: This system works by using only half of the engine's cylinders during some driving situations that don't require much power, and then activating all the cylinders when conditions require more power.

Each has its benefits and it's up to you to decide which system you feel most comfortable with. Now let's turn our attention to MPG.

Cadillac Escalade MPG: Miles Per Gallon

There are two different sets of MPG stats for the Escalade. The first relies on the gasoline-powered engines, while the other is for diesel. Both are EPA-estimated MPG:

  • 14 City / 19 Highway / 16 Combined (Gas)
  • 11 City / 16 Highway / 13 Combined (Diesel)

The main point of comparison is that there is a 3-point drop in MPG when switching to diesel. Knowing what we do about the fuel management systems, diesel is perhaps best chosen for drivers who need the kind of power diesel provides.

With gas however, it's a bit more about balance. Seeing that both engine options get the same MPG, what you're choosing between is levels of power. If you need the power of the V8 gas option, then it's available to you while the Duramax® is there for more everyday driving. These engines, in conjunction with the massive fuel tank, allow you to cruise in luxury and make a statement no matter where you go.

Cadillac Escalade MPG: Fuel-Saving Technology

In addition to the fuel management systems that we discussed earlier, there is one piece of fuel-saving technology to discuss:

  • Automatic Stop/Start: When at complete stops, the driver keeps their foot on the brake pedal, and under certain conditions, the engine shuts off. When they remove the foot from the brake pedal, the engine automatically restarts.

Auto Stop/Start makes a terrific addition to the stable of systems and features in the Escalade. This feature works in both gas and diesel engines, improving their fuel usage noticeably. Depending on traffic conditions, this feature prevents you from burning precious fuel while waiting for your turn.
